Chemical peels are one of the most effective — and most misunderstood — treatments in modern skincare. The word “chemical” can sound intimidating, but at their core, peels are simply controlled exfoliation using carefully selected acids to reveal fresher, healthier skin beneath.
How peels work
Every day, your skin naturally sheds dead cells. As we age, this process slows down, leading to dullness, uneven texture, and clogged pores. A chemical peel accelerates this renewal by dissolving the bonds between dead cells, allowing them to shed more efficiently.
The depth of the peel — and therefore the intensity of results — depends on the acid type, concentration, and time left on the skin.
Types of peel
Superficial peels use mild acids like lactic acid or mandelic acid at lower concentrations. They brighten and smooth with minimal downtime — think of them as a deep exfoliation. Perfect for beginners or as a monthly maintenance treatment.
Medium peels use glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) at moderate concentrations. These penetrate deeper, targeting fine lines, moderate pigmentation, and acne scarring. Expect 3–5 days of peeling.
Deep peels use phenol or high-concentration TCA. These are less common in spa settings and are typically performed by dermatologists for significant scarring or sun damage.
At AUREA, we primarily work with superficial and medium peels, adjusting the formula for each client’s skin type and concerns.
What to expect during treatment
After cleansing, the peel solution is applied evenly across the face. You may feel a mild tingling or warmth — this is normal and indicates the acid is working. The solution is neutralised after a set time (usually 3–10 minutes), followed by a calming mask and SPF application.
The entire treatment takes approximately 45 minutes.
Aftercare
Post-peel care is just as important as the treatment itself:
- Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 7 days. Wear SPF 50 daily — non-negotiable.
- Do not pick or peel flaking skin. Let it shed naturally.
- Skip active ingredients (retinol, vitamin C, AHAs) for 5–7 days.
- Keep skin hydrated with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser.
- Avoid heat — saunas, hot yoga, and intense exercise for 48 hours.
Who should avoid peels
Peels are not suitable for everyone. We do not recommend them if you have active eczema, rosacea flare-ups, open wounds, or if you have used isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past 6 months. Always disclose your full skincare history during consultation.
The results
With a course of 3–6 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart, most clients see a significant improvement in skin tone, texture, pore size, and fine lines. Many describe their skin as looking “lit from within” — which is exactly the effect we aim for at AUREA.
